How to Download and Use SteamCMD to Install and Update Dedicated Servers
SteamCMD is a command-line version of the Steam client that allows you to install and update various dedicated servers available on Steam using a simple interface. It works with games that use the SteamPipe content system, which includes most of the popular titles such as Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead 2, and more. In this article, we will show you how to download and use SteamCMD to set up your own dedicated server for your favorite game.
Downloading SteamCMD
The first step is to download SteamCMD from the official website: https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/SteamCMD#Downloading_SteamCMD[^1^]. Depending on your operating system, you will need to follow different instructions to extract and run the program.
steam master server updater free download
Windows
Create a folder for SteamCMD. For example: C:\steamcmd
Download SteamCMD for Windows: https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steamcmd.zip
Extract the contents of the zip file to the folder.
Linux
Create a user account named steam to run SteamCMD safely, isolating it from the rest of the operating system. Do not run steamcmd as the root user, as this is a security risk.
As the root user, create the steam user: sudo useradd -m steam sudo passwd steam
Go into its home folder: sudo -u steam -s cd /home/steam
It's recommended to install the SteamCMD package from your distribution repositories, if available. For example, on Ubuntu/Debian, you can run: sudo apt install steamcmd. If you are using a 64-bit machine, you will need to add multiverse and install some additional libraries. See https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/SteamCMD#Linux[^1^] for more details.
If your distribution does not have a SteamCMD package, you can download it manually from https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steamcmd_linux.tar.gz and extract it to /home/steam.
macOS
Create a folder for SteamCMD. For example: /steamcmd
Download SteamCMD for macOS: https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steamcmd_osx.tar.gz
Extract the contents of the tar file to the folder.
Running SteamCMD
The next step is to run SteamCMD and log in with your Steam account or anonymously. You will also need to specify the app ID of the game you want to install or update.
Windows
Open a command prompt and navigate to the folder where you extracted SteamCMD.
Type steamcmd.exe and press Enter.
You will see a prompt like this: Steam>
To log in anonymously, type login anonymous. To log in with your Steam account, type login username password, where username and password are your Steam credentials. Note that some games require a valid license to run a dedicated server, so you may need to use your own account.
